Antique Vintage Chevy being restored at body shop. Photo #201509036. Support my work by downloading this photo at www.dreamstime.com. 100% of funds go back into shelter photography and education programs. Even though the hot and sultry “dog days of summer” technically have passed, the temperatures still remain in the lower nineties with an oppressively high humidity. This combination has made for some wonderful spectacles of thunderstorms each afternoon this week. Huge billowing mountains of clouds charged with electricity roll in each afternoon proceeded and accompanied by the echoing rumbles like giant avalanches down endless slopes. I have gone out each afternoon to watch the storms that march in, gazing around in wonder until being chased back indoors by the relentless downpour that eventually follows. Sitting out behind my office next to the county’s fleet maintenance shop is an old Chevy donated to the Sherriff’s office by and elderly Walton resident for use in the county parades. The car and clouds just seemed to go together and made for a wonderful photo opportunity.
Stopped along Olympic Drive on my way to morning prayer meeting and got this shot for the website I maintain for my church, Victory Chapel. Our Fellowship emphasis is all about evangelism, discipleship and church planting. An essential part of discipleship is morning prayer. Our building is open every weekday morning from 6 to 8 AM. Morning prayer each morning before work is a regular habit I’ve maintained for 21 years and has kept me saved and sane.
Athens, Georgia A day hike to one of our nearby Georgia State Parks - Watson Mill Bridge State Park in Georgia. Touring a Civil War historical site and Georgia State Park not far from my home. A. H. Stephens State Park, also known as A. H. Stevens Historic Park, is a 1,177 acres Georgia state park located in Crawfordville. The park is named for Alexander Hamilton Stephens, the Vice President of the Confederate States of America, and a former Georgia governor. The park contains Stephens' home, Liberty Hall, which has been fully restored to its original 1875 style. The park's museum houses one of Georgia's largest collections of Civil War artifacts. The park also offers several mill ponds for fishing and nature trails. (source: Wikipedia) John 14:2 In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. I took my wife to the Biltmore Estate for our 10th anniversary. Biltmore Estate is a large private estate and tourist attraction in Asheville, North Carolina. Built by George Washington Vanderbilt II between 1889 and 1895 and is the largest privately owned house in the United States. I found the secret to getting photographs of the mansion without a lawn covered with tourists was to stay until sunset when all the crowds disappeared. We casually walked the grounds and got photos from several different locations. Cape Henry Memorial Cross, located on the tip of Cape Henry, marks the approximate site where Jamestown settlers first landed in the New World on April 27, 1607. First Landing State Park. The Cape Henry Lighthouse is a lighthouse at Cape Henry, the landform marking the southern entrance to Chesapeake Bay in the U.S. state of Virginia. From 2006 to 2009 my family and I relocated to the Hampton Roads area of Virginia to pastor a new church for our Fellowship. One of the main things I enjoyed about the Virginia Beach/Hampton/Yorktown area was the number of historical sites; both Revolutionary and Civil War.
Nestled below the two Cape Henry Lighthouses stands the First Landing monument. When the Jamestown settlers landed on dry ground in the new world in 1607, their first action was to erect a cross as a monument to their savior and deliverer. In our day of removing the old monuments deemed offensive by today’s standards (writing this in 2018), it is nice to reflect on a time when Christianity wasn’t “offensive” and Christian symbols appeared on nearly all of our founding monuments and buildings. I can distinctly recall the date when Christ made His “first landing” within my own heart on December 1, 1993. While there is no cement or carven structure to represent the event, the testimony of my very life stands as a monument to that event. |
